Man killed, son hurt in head-on collision near Mersing

A 40-year-old civil servant was killed and his son was injured in an accident involving two vehicles at KM8 Jalan Jemaluang-Mersing here.

The deceased, Ahmad Azham Muhammad, who works in the Mersing Industrial Training Institute, suffered serious injuries and died during the 8.57am incident on Wednesday (Jan 10).

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Laham said initial investigations revealed that the victim was taking his seven-year-old son to school at SK Sri Mersing when the accident occurred.

"A lorry veered from the opposite lane before ramming into the victim's car," he said in a statement.

"The 34-year-old lorry driver was unhurt and checks revealed that the vehicle had been issued with 19 summons for speeding," he said, adding that the lorry driver himself had two previous summonses for various traffic offences.

ACP Mohamad Laham said that the lorry driver, who is from Terengganu, had been detained and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving.
