Aerobic rice cultivation to beat drought
MERSING: The Farmers’ Organisation Authority (LPP) will introduce aerobic rice cultivation at dry padi fields which uses sprinkler irrigation here.
LPP chairman Datuk Zainal Dahalan said the rice seeds developed by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) require less water than wet rice cultivation.
He said the aerobic rice cultivation will help the farmers during a drought.
“Although the yield may be lower in comparison with wet rice cultivation, it will ensure that the livelihood of the farmers are not affected during a drought,” he said. He said the method is better than not being able to plant rice seeds at all.
“Farmers can plant it twice a year,” he said during a ceremony to present aid to 281 farmers in Endau and Mersing, at the Endau Area Farmers’ Association hall, here, recently.
In Endau, 158 farmers received aid amounting to RM273,556, while another 123 farmers in Mersing received a total of RM131,681 to alleviate their financial burden after their crops were damaged by weather conditions.
Zainal said aerobic rice cultivation was already carried out in Perlis and Seberang Prai in Penang.
