Swiftlets bombard taxi, bus terminal
Commuters are fed up with the bird droppings in the waiting area and on them.
IT is dirty and nauseating. This was the general public reaction to swiftlet droppings in the vicinity of the Mersing Bus and Taxi Terminal here.
Bus and taxi commuters, as well those who patronise the food stalls here, have been encountering the problem for the past one year.
"People have become targets for the birds," said Isa Salleh, 67, a pensioner. "I hope the Mersing District Council (MDC) can do something to protect the public from being hit by bird droppings."
"The sight of the droppings on the ground and on the head and clothes of people passing by are getting on our nerves.
"Even the MDC road cleaners are not spared. They have to spend about half an hour each morning just to clean the road," he said.
Isa urged MDC to install a tarpaulin sheet below the ceiling to stop the droppings from reaching the ground.
"Something has to be done as people are staying away from the food stalls here.
"Can you blame the people for not coming here? Who wants to have bird droppings on their clothes, head, and in their food?"
A rental car operator, Ahmad Zaudin Adon, 72, said his car is covered with bird droppings as he parks his vehicle out in the open at the terminal.
"I hope the Mersing Association of Hired Car Operators will appeal to the local council to help us solve the problem," Zaudin said.
Housewife, Hanisah Md Dom, 43, who is a regular at the terminal, said people no longer wait for their ride at the foyer but at some distance away from the waiting area.
"We cannot wait at the designated waiting area unless we are not bother about bird defecating on us," she said.
