RM1.5 million eatery, to be built in the style of Rumah Limas Johor, will boost the local economy and draw tourists to Mersing
THE landscape of Sg Endau here is poise to change with the development of a RM1.5 million seafood eatery to be built according to the concept of Rumah Limas Johor, a house designed to preserve the Malay heritage.
The project, an initiative of the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC), is expected to be completed in January next year.
Among the highlights of the development to be called Medan Ikan Bakar are food kiosks, restrooms, a gazebo, a pier and surau.
ECERDC chief executive officer Datuk Jebasingam Issace John said the new eatery is strategically located and is slated to become a major destination for the fisheries sector in the state. The waterfront development will also be a big draw to tourists in Mersing.
Jebasingam added that the project will not only boost the local economy but also create job and business opportunities for the nearby residents.
"The growing population in Sg Endau will enjoy the long-term benefits of the development," he said after attending a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Medan Ikan Bakar which was launched by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Meanwhile, residents and local entrepreneurs said the ECERDC initiative will be able to improve the image of the town as well as develop the surrounding area.
Ahmad Asri, 45, a resident here said the open concept eatery will also appeal to motorists who ply the Johor Baru-Kuantan road.
"Dining here at night will be a memorable experience for all."
